Buddha found ridding the self of material possessions allowed for the finding of the center of self. Poverty can be described in the basic sense of having nothing, no money, no possessions, no place to live. However, Buddha expanded the idea to give poverty a positive outlook. Having nothing, means there is nothing to interfere with self awareness and understanding.

Buddha went from having everything to poverty. For Buddha, getting to the point of clarity meant removing the distractions surrounding everyday life. Buddha saw the poverty in the people surrounding the kingdom after years of shielding by the king. Traveling through the poverty in the kingdom made the prince sick after numerous years hidden away from the suffering of the people. Experiencing the people in the conditions of poverty was too hard for Buddha to bear. Through walking among the poverty stricken people, Buddha saw the riches prevalent in the princely life were not needed and no longer enjoyable. In order to give the poor help, Buddha had to become like the poverty laden people.

From seeing the poverty of the people in the kingdom, Buddha decided to leave the palace of the king and become part a member of the poor. Leaving in the middle of the night, Buddha removed the princely robes and donned the clothes of a beggar as well as shaved the hair off the head of the prince the man was no longer. Buddha left behind a newborn son and wife. The search for enlightenment started with a look at the poverty surrounding the kingdom Buddha had once called home.

Now part of the poverty laden people, Buddha sought the enlightenment necessary for a life of meaning. As Buddha, the teachings or balance were brought to every person, including the poverty stricken people. Even with poverty, enlightenment can be found. Having nothing, the self can find wholeness. When a person is in poverty, things can be easier to find when there is already nothing there. Buddha created Buddhism through the understanding of poverty and nothingness creating the means for enlightenment.

Transcendence by Navin Doshi provides added information on the Buddha and poverty.
