Great thinkers and philosophers have appeared throughout history. An important figure in the history of philosophy is Rene Descartes. As Descartes is considered the father of modern philosophy, there is no doubt as to the importance of the achievements made to philosophy with the body of work Descartes produced.</p> <p>Descartes found the Scholastic philosophy tradition of the day to be outdated. Descartes decided to break from tradition as Scholastic philosophy could no longer go anywhere or provide further knowledge. The philosophy of Descartes turned away from the philosophical traditions of the day in two ways modernizing traditional philosophy.</p> <p>The first of the philosophical changes was to reject the substantial forms in regard to physics with explanatory rules. Descartes attempted to explain the beneficial uses of mechanistic principles for expanding the information of the physical sciences. The rejection of the forms in philosophy was done by Descartes due to the belief of the confusion caused between the concepts of the mind and of the body.</p> <p>The second of the philosophical changes was to deny the main concept of knowledge and learning coming from sensation. The tradition of philosophy was to follow the view of Aristotle wherein every person was born with no knowledge and through sensations the knowledge would be learned. With the new ideas in philosophy, Descartes expounded on the argument proving the senses can deceive a person so using the senses could not be valid or reliable. If the slightest doubt could be found, then the thought or idea was considered false. Descartes was looking for the truth in philosophy and the proper way to find the truth was eliminating walls in the way of the search. Descartes isolated the flaws in using sensation alone to determine the knowledge and understanding of a person and in turn provide a new idea into the way people acquire information through philosophy.</p> <p>Once Rene Descartes had turned from the established traditions of philosophy, the birth of the modern view and the knowledge provided by the work paved the way for the new era in philosophy. While Aristotle created a foundation of revolutionary ideas, there was only so far the knowledge could go based on the established concepts.
