Journeys can be made at every point in life, but a pilgrimage is a journey of significance. When a person goes on a pilgrimage, the journey is usually to a specific place of spiritual significance for the religion practiced by the individual. Part of the pilgrimage is the actual journey and the additional portion includes the shrine or sacred location of the pilgrimage destination.

For a good number of people in the world, making the trip to a holy and sacred location provides evidence of the religion and creates a stronger bond to the god for the individuals personally. For particular people, the pilgrimage is looked upon as part of being a follower of the religion.

For Muslims, the followers of the religion of Islam, the pilgrimage is part of the faith. Attempting the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in life is part of the Five Pillars of Faith of the religion. The pilgrimage should be attempted by people afforded the opportunity and healthy as well. The Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca is the largest in the religious faiths of the world. Muslims can make a pilgrimage to Medina, the second holiest location of the religion as well.

Similar pilgrimages are done for the religions of the world. Followers of Christianity will go to Jerusalem, the Holy Land, to walk through the area where Jesus lived, but the important place to visit is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Followers of Buddhism have four sites to visit for a pilgrimage. The followers can visit the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini. Bodh Gaya is the place of enlightenment of Buddha. Sarnath is the place Buddha proclaimed his first teaching. Finally, believers can visit Kusinara where Buddha died.

Hindu followers are encouraged to make pilgrimages throughout life to locations close to home, but there are a vast amount of popular places to visit as well. The Chardham comprises four site of significance for Hindu followers including, Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram.

Pilgrimages can also entail people visiting locations significant to famous figures or historical events. However, the primary pilgrimage is still making a spiritual journey for the purpose of religious understanding and meditation. People find making a pilgrimage brings the religion closer and creates tangible evidence of religious power and importance.

For further information on the reasons and methods of a pilgrimage, read Transcendence by Navin Doshi or review www.NavinDoshi.com

Order Transcendence by Navin Doshi

Price of Transcendence $20.00 US

Questions?
E-Mail to Ithaca Press
books@ithacapress.com
(607) 273-2870

<div align="center""> Copyright © 2009-2010 Ithaca Press.
